the answers to the commonly asked questions of future waxing clients.
Body Waxing? Why won't you wax my face for me?
On women, the facial hair (except the eyebrows) is under hormonal control. Unlike the rest of your body hair, facial hair when waxed will come back thicker and stronger. Obviously I am in the business of helping you eliminate your hair problem, not making it worse.
Gentlemen however, we are happy to wax on the face. Many men love never having a prickly fill because they never have to shave again.
Is it safe to get waxed? I heard you can catch diseases from waxing ick!?
Being highly germaphobic myself, I really appreciate this question. At Softouch I utilize fresh hospital grade latex-free disposable gloves for EVERY waxing service to minimize exposure. I also NEVER double dip waxing sticks as this transfers bacteria to the warm wax pot. Which allows the bacteria to breed there and is passed on to the next client.
For strip waxing (where one uses a heated wax, applies it to the skin then rubs a piece of fabric or strip on the wax then zips off the strip hence the name strip wax). I utilize the patented PHD waxing System. PHD stands for Professional Hygienic and Disposable. It has disposable applicators that are changed for EACH client eliminating any chance of cross contamination of product.
The skin is cleaned before each treatment with state approved antiseptic. I utilize hospital level disinfection and sterilization on all non-disposable implements and tools which eliminates any chance of cross contamination.
Really, you wax men too?
Many men are enjoying being maintenance free and ridding themselves of unwanted back hair, nose hair, eyebrow hair, and other excess body hair. Unlike shaving stubble, waxed areas grow in finer and softer passing the "snuggle" test. Is it easier to shave every day or wax once a month?
Usually very athletic men including bicyclists, body builders, swimmers, and runners find waxing far more esthetically pleasing and easier than shaving body hair before competing and don't miss razor rash.
How should I prepare myself before getting waxed?
The best way to prepare yourself is to first relax and know you're in good hands; I am very well trained and experienced. I have done thousands of body waxes including extreme bikini line work for men and women. My main goal is to make this treatment as comfortable as possible for you.
You may want to avoid using harsh soaps or astringents for 2 hours before and after waxing. Definitely avoid any tanning or hot water (hot showers, hot soaking baths, hot tubs etc.) for 8 hours before and after treatment. A normal warm shower to clean up before waxing is appreciated.
Some clients choose to take an OTC pain reliever such as Advil or Tylenol 45 minutes before their appointment. We have also found that clients that take an antacid 30 minutes before their appointment experience less redness post treatment.
How often should I get waxed?
A custom treatment plan will be developed for you detailing how often you need to come in for best results. On average every 3 to 4 weeks is the recommendation or when the hair reaches 1/4 inch in length.
For the first waxing session, it is ideal to have hair slightly longer, about 1/3" long. We can always trim hair that is too long, but it is difficult to get smooth results if hair is not long enough. Better too long then too short!
Will the treatment hurt--I've seen waxing in movies...will I die?
It will be uncomfortable but tolerable. The first time you wax is always more uncomfortable than later waxes. After all, you have allowed those hairs to grow for years in some cases and they can be extremely coarse. If you can tweeze you can wax just fine.
As the treatments progress, the less frequent and more comfortable they will become as the hairs become finer and smaller.
If you can stand to remove a band-aid really fast you can wax just fine. Really, in the movies they do just about everything wrong or shall I say on purpose for dramatic effect? Professional waxing is so fast you'll be done before you know it. Honestly, you'll be okay; the sensation stops immediately after.
What should I wear?
This of course depends on the area to be waxed and your personal comfort/modesty level. A few suggestions:
Avoid wearing clothes that will fit tightly over the area to be waxed. This can cause uncomfortable chafing or rubbing after your waxing. For the back or chest, wear a darker colored soft shirt as wax can stain lighter colored fabrics. Do not wear stiff shirts or scratchy fabrics because that will hurt! Without hair as a buffer you will find your skin to be MUCH more sensitive. For the underarms, you may wear a tank top or you can remove your shirt. For most hair patterns, ladies may keep their bra on. For leg waxing you may wear looser fitting pants or skirt and for full leg waxing an old swimsuit or underwear. Avoid wearing new fleecy sweatpants you haven't washed for leg waxes as you may find when you get home you are covered in sweat pants fuzz.
Disposable underwear will be provided for those having bikini line/genital waxing done as there can be some wax residue. I'd hate to ruin your favorite pair of underwear. We also utilize the disposable underwear to assist in stretching the skin tight making waxing more comfortable for you with less risk of bruising. With the Playboy or the full Sphinx wax it is easier for me if you are comfortable without your underwear and instead use our disposable pairs but I respect your modesty. For all bikini line waxing, during the treatment if you prefer you can wear your own underwear as I can work around it. Depending on what hair you would like removed, select appropriate underwear styles (i.e. a thong if you want the derriere waxed) and not your favorite pair.
How long will it take?
That depends on the area and how much hair you have. There will never be an upcharge.
bikini waxing - up to an hour
legs and bikini - 90 minutes
back or chest - 60 minutes.
underarms or arms - 15-30 minutes.
If you are an electrolysis client, the charge is simply dependent on treatment time. I will only charge you for the time we use and I will do my best to estimate the worst case scenario for you ahead of time so there are never any surprises when it is time to pay if you are receiving the electrolysis client discount.
Generally, the first wax takes longer then subsequent waxes as there will only be the active growing hair present so there will be less of it.
What kind of wax do you use?
I utilize many different types of both hard (a.k.a. stripless wax, European wax or Brazilian body wax) and soft wax depending on the area to be waxed, the type of hair growth and the client's skin. I do not change any additional fees for hard waxing and tend to use hard wax on underarms and bikini lines as a rule as these tend to have very coarse hair and hard wax does not remove the outer layer of skin like strip wax does. Since some areas of the body can benefit from the extra exfoliation that strip wax provides, we routinely use strip wax on legs, and backs.
Why do you need to see my driver's license or a photo ID?
The most important reason is I care enough to establish your real identity.
As I am taking your personal and health information, the HIPPA regulations also require I verify your identity. A positive identification of you with your picture and name (like a valid photo ID shows) protects you and I both from liability.
I also need to be sure you are over 18 and can legally agree to treatment.
I'm a normal guy worried I'll get an erection during genital waxing does that happen a lot? / How much will my guy "like" waxing?
This is a very common concern among men and one of the top questions recieved from potential waxing clients. They worry that the technician might be a female and that they will become aroused during genital waxing.
Unfortunately, some members of the public still associate genital waxing services with smut, pornography, and the sex industry. While you might feel more attractive after services and I am glad you are happy with the results, during your waxing isn't the time to focus on that. Waxing is commonly done for personal hygiene reasons, the area is simply easier to keep clean and dry which also helps to prevent issues such as jock itch.
I offer professional waxing services here and not any type of sexual services.
Most men do not find the sensation of depilatory waxing to be sexually arousing and would not report it as a pleasurable experience, tolerable is generally the term we hear. While they like the results, they tolerate the process. Typically men can control their erectile responses. It would not be a normal event to have an erection during waxing for several reasons: First and foremost I am very clinical about it. The technicians conduct themselves in a professional manner and while friendly, aren't friendly. Your personal modesty will be respected, and you will respect mine, you will be appropriately draped and positioned at all times. Because I utilize hard wax, there is no invasive rubbing of the area being waxed like there would be in strip waxing.
Having said that, if you are looking for some sort of "happy ending" you should know that I take my jobs very, very, seriously. Understand that any illicit, sexually suggestive remarks, or advances made by you will result in the immediate termination of the treatment and you will pay the full fee for the service and may be denied future treatment.
So um, it's due to be "that time of the month" when my bikini waxing appointment is scheduled should I cancel?
Hair removal doesn't always coincide with your most convenient moments. Although you will be feeling "not so fresh" really it doesn't impact my job or bother me at all. Feel free to keep your appointment, for generally unless you are telling me I would have never known. I would recommend you utilize a tampon or the Instead soft cup type product. If you are a tampon user you can tuck the string up and we will be all set to wax away. I respect your comfort level and if you would rather reschedule of course I understand.
I have just tons of hair...I feel like sasquatch...really can you help me too?
Absolutely, remember what is a lot of hair to you and what is a lot of hair to me in my professional experience, are two very different things. Trust me, you aren't alone, and every day I assist people just like you in eliminating years of embarrassing hair from virtually anywhere. No one has too much hair for me to deal with.
Ideas To Make Your Treatment More Comfortable
Avoid caffeine 6 - 10 hours before treatment.
Don't smoke 2-4 hours prior to treatment.
You may want to try taking your favorite OTC analgesic, such as Tylenol, Advil, or aspirin, 30 minutes before your treatment.
Practice using deep breathing and other relaxation techniques. Remember it will be over very quickly.
Consider using one of the topical anesthetics (numbing agents) offered before you arrive for your treatment.
Try taking an antacid (Tums, Rolaids etc.) 30-45 minutes before your treatment, it helps reduce redness double quick!
I Will Not Be Able to Wax the Following Clients
Waxing services are not recommended and will not be performed for those clients using (or have used in the last 6 months) Acutane or Retin A products. If you have utilized these or similar products please be aware there is a very real risk of loosing skin if you wax as these products by their very nature thin the skin!
I am also unable to wax if you have tanned on the day of your waxing appointment, or if you have a visible sunburn or other non-intact skin issue for your own safety.
If you are taking prescription medications for acne or using Retinol type products I will be unable to provide you with waxing services due to the potential for skin damage.
